My best business trip in Qingdao, China
 

It was my third business trip in Qingdao and I had been staying in Shangri La, Qingdao for all trips. It was also my shortest trip with two nights stay and the longest domestic flight delay I encountered, about 2.5 hours at Guangzhou airport. Fortunately I brought along a spare battery and I could keep in touch with family and friends, surf the internet while waiting in a new lounge.

Instead of arriving at 8 pm at Shangri La hotel, I arrived at 10.30 pm. I was very pleasantly surprised to be informed that I was upgraded to the Valley Wing! This was a first for me and I thought to myself, this certainly makes up for the delays. The room was huge and luxurious. I could relax and watch TV from the bathtub.

Very exhausted and hungry, as the domestic flight served miserable food and I lost appetite. Food wasn’t great at Guangzhou airport either. As all restaurants were closed, I ordered room service ….. a sumptuous beef burger with lobster bisque soup. Food was very well presented with soup in a thermal flask, kept steaming hot. The soup is a must have and I was happily slurping away, oblivious of the late hour. I finally had a good meal for the day.

I drifted off to sleep very soon as the bed and pillows were very comfortable, I felt at home. The steaming humidifier and silent air-condition helped. The next day I woke up, refreshed and off to the buffet breakfast. Work was tough that day, and when I returned to the hotel, I was so pleased with the Valley Lounge. The only issue was that it was closing at 7 pm. How I wished I had ended work earlier and be able to enjoy this more. It was an excellent view with night lights and I was soon enjoying a glass of smooth white wine with some nibbles.

Though there was a new shopping mall next door, I was not too interested to go as I needed to pack and decided to order room service again. After going through the menu, I selected cod fish with pumpkin soup and had no regrets. The cod fish was succulent, fresh and tasty. I promised myself that if I return for another trip, this is something I would order again.

The next morning, I had packed breakfast delivered to my room, as scheduled, due to my early departure flight. As it did not include coffee or tea, I decided to visit the Valley Lounge again and was really glad I did. What a beautiful view of the sea and sunrise! It was breathtaking but unfortunately I left my camera in the room. Initially I was somewhat skeptical about the orange juice as my thinking was that freshly squeezed juices only exist at home. I soon realized that the juice was indeed freshly squeezed, not diluted with ice … it was so refreshing. The fragrant cappuccino was served and I had some fruits. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a lot of time and had to leave quickly.

All in all, this was my best stay in Shangri La, Qingdao. Thank you Shangri La, I really appreciate the upgraded room and facilities. This is the first time I wished I could have stayed longer for a business trip!
