Local Staycation Trend. A New way to enjoy Holidays .
18 August 2015
We celebrated my daughter’s birthday and SG50 at Shangri-La Hotel Singapore. What a wonderful and memorial way to mark this occasion. This is our first time experiencing local staycation with Shangri-La group in Singapore. Before this I always thought holidays must be associated with going overseas as I never expected staying in Singapore can be so fun and enjoyable. Now I discovered that there are many aspects which make a local staycation so attractive. You can save the hassle of having to buy air tickets, travel insurance, airport transfer, local transport etc and in the process save a lot too. Not to mention not having to do much planning and the convenience of being able to drive around anywhere. Staycations are so refreshing as there is no need to go through long journeys before finally reaching the destination which is much easier on a family with small kids. After all, we just want a nice hotel or resort to have a relaxing and fun weekend. We love nature and gardens so when I received the post from Shangri-La Singapore that Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore is one of the largest landscaped gardens in the country, with more than 110 varieties of 133,000 plants, flowers and trees, I was so impressed. A secret garden right in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Orchard. The plants are beautiful and there is even a waterfall. We felt so close to Nature. We even spotted several squirrels scurrying around.
We have been to Shangri-La Hotel Singapore a number of times for meals. Each time without fail my kids would ask me can we go swimming? Now finally I can say yes to them.
After checking in we headed straight to the Kid’s Room. This is a spacious room which is full of toys books and a big TV. There were many hands- on activities for kids to take part eg colouring, making key chains and also free balloons. My daughters asked for 2 balloon crowns so they can be princesses together. After that I and my wife took turn to have a massage with Chi Spa while the kids were swimming. They were having so much fun. The Spa is great. I felt much more relaxed and energetic. Then we walked down to Orchard road which only 5 to 10 mins away to get my daughter a birthday gift at the biggest Toys R Us at Forum Shopping Mall. Shopping is so convenient. But the kids rushed us go back to the hotel after shopping for toys which is a bit unusual as they are never willing to leave toy shops. My kids were so happy to playing hide n seek in the room and were excited to have a long bath in the bath tub. The toilet is huge and there are two sinks so they don’t have to fight over who gets to brush teeth first. How thoughtful.
On National Day, we had a very good breakfast at the line. The spread there is huge. I kept thinking whether we were having brunch rather than breakfast. We tried very hard to sample as much food as we could but even then I think there was still many dishes that we didn’t have a chance to try. Feeling bloated, we decided to visit Upper Seletar Reservoir filled with lush greenery and rich history for a nice walk after breakfast. Kids needed a nap after the long walk. They fall in sleep straight away and we also joined them shortly. I guess its hard to wake up after being in this super comfy king size bed. We celebrated my daughter’s birthday dinner at Waterfall restaurant with grandparents. Another advantage of local staycations for birthday celebrations is that you can ask your close relatives and families to join in. The Waterfall offers authentic and unique Southern Italian cuisine that combines the freshest seafood, handmade pastas and heirloom recipes. It did not disappoint. Food was fantastic and this complements the smart but warm decor. In conjunction with Golden Circle’s 5th Anniversary I was even able to earn extravagant bonus GC Award Points from the dinner bill. What a bonus!
On the last day of our staycation, we went to the Rose Veranda for breakfast. It was a different treat to the Line as it has a very plush and luxurious environment with comfy sofa seats.Good way to start a great day ahead. After this, my kids ran to the swimming pool for a last chance to have a morning swim .We were all so unwilling to leave this heavenly hotel.
This staycation definitely surprised us. It was so much fun and my daughter had the best birthday celebration ever. The whole staycation was beyond our wildest expectations. We will be back for other special occasions very soon!
