A room with a Phew!
14 September 2012
The alarm clock sounded and we were awake in seconds. Today is the day, we leave the European winter and head east for our annual holiday - knowing that, in less than 24 hours, we will be in the warmth of Asia and Shangri-La.
This year (2011) we decided to try a new destination - Sabah in Malaysia. Whilst sitting by the pool on our last holiday at the Rasa Sayang in Penang, one of the pool attendants had asked us if we had ever been to Sabah - his description of the Rasa Ria Resort sounded perfect and before we had headed home we had made our initial enquiry and there began a new adventure.
From the moment we arrived at Kota Kinabalu airport our holiday began. A driver was waiting to whisk us off to the tropical paradise that is the Rasa Ria Resort, an hour north of the capital, explaining the history and cultural of this part of Malaysia as he drove.
On approaching the resort, it was immediately evident that this was going to be something special. The personal welcome by staff & management, the ease of the in-room check in and the most luxurious of rooms with THAT VIEW - for the next 10 nights our own Shangri La for sure.
We enjoyed every second of our stay; the warmth & sincerity of the staff, the array of dining options, the spa & massages, the golf course and, of course, the resort's own nature reserve where our close-up encounter with Orang-utans was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Sadly, holidays come to an end but the memories of our time in Sabah will last forever.
We are looking forward to our return later in 2012 to the Rasa Sayang in Penang and to personally thank the pool attendant who told us about Sabah in the first place.
