Heaven on Earth
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts opens Hylandia by Shangri-La in the fabled paradise of northwestern Yunnan.
Shrouded in mist and myth, explorers have long sought to find the paradise rumoured to be hidden deep within the Snow Mountains of northwestern Yunnan in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Now, modern-day seekers can journey there to discover their own interpretation of paradise, with the new Hylandia by Shangri-La as their gateway to one of China’s most captivating regions.
Owned and operated by Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, the 166-room hotel is the first international full-service hotel in the city, located at an altitude of 3,260m and a mere 10 minutes’ drive from the airport. From its exceptional design to the little details in its service, every effort has been made to offer guests of Hylandia an incredible, immersive experience while they explore this mystical land of breathtaking natural beauty.
While Hylandia encompasses all the modern comforts found at other Shangri-La properties, many elements unique to Diqing have been adapted and incorporated in the architecture. Envisioned to be more like a cluster of pavilions, courtyards and gardens instead of a traditional hotel, the property’s paths and plazas hold little surprises at every corner, waiting for guests to explore and discover.
The Wisdom Room and the Aroma Room are two salons that flank the lobby vestibule, with the former being a private library and the latter a tea room. The guestroom design borrows elements from regions along the Great Silk Road, using vibrant colours and featuring such elements as turquoise, coral and lacquer. In particular, the rooms celebrate woven works as weaving is one of the main means of expression and craft in Yunnan.
The majority of Hylandia’s staff are from Diqing and their role is to help create unforgettable moments and memories for guests. A range of signature experiences, from cycling in the nearby 1,000-year-old Dukezong Old Town and then hiking to a local temple, to horseback riding and picnicking in the Pudacuo National Park, will take travellers on a journey exploring the snow-capped mountains, deep gorges, shimmering lakes, vast grasslands and other natural wonders of the region.
Even at the hotel, guests can take in the magnificent view of the Snow Mountains glistening in the distance. At twilight, they can gather around the fire pit on the rooftop garden to enjoy the warmth and stargaze through a telescope or enjoy a private dinner in a traditional nomadic Tibetan tent in garden. Whatever your fancy, the options at Hylandia are limitless.
