What Makes a Great Business Hotel?

We've long thought that the 5-Star rating system is a little out of touch with the ever evolving needs of the road warrior. Here are some of the things we'd like to see business hotels start competing on.

Baseline

These points should be provided at a minimum.

  • A clean, fresh and quiet room
  • Air conditioning that can keep the temperature a constant 21 degrees
  • Amenities that work

Internet Everywhere

Providing an in room only cable for $20 per day is no longer good enough - we now expect ...

  • Free & ubiquitous high speed internet over WiFi
  • Must at a minimum support a VOIP conversation (i.e. Skype) without dropouts
  • Ideally supports Netflix movie streaming
  • Single fee for all devices (included in room rate)
  • Must allow VPN connections and SSL connections for email

In room office

  • Desk with adjustable chair
  • Power sockets dedicated for laptop / charger use
  • USB charging sockets
  • International adapters (available for purchase)
  • Connectivity to flat screen (VGA or HDMI)

Integrated in room entertainment

  • Audio visual equipment that can be connected to laptops / MP3 players / smartphones
  • Bluetooth pairing would be ideal, as an incoming call would automatically pause any audio
  • Digital TV channels - there's no excuse for low quality analogue broadcasts on a flat screen TV

Bedroom

  • Contemporary decor
  • Blackout curtains that close in the middle
  • A comfortable bed and different pillow options
  • Well insulated walls, minimizing noise
  • A couch as well as armchairs

Bathroom

  • A dedicated shower - not one situated above a slippery bath tub
  • Good water pressure and an adjustable shower head

Laundry options

  • Suit / shirt pressing on arrival (included in room rate)
  • Cheaper wash and fold options
  • Clothes line in shower

Check in / out process

  • Do everything possible to avoid queues on arrival and departure
  • If I have booked a hotel car transfer from the airport, have the driver check me in
  • Personalised rooms (Your preferences remembered across hotels)
  • Let me check out online or on the IPTV system

Helpful Staff

  • Good language skills
  • Understanding of business traveller needs
  • Knowledgeable about local restaurants

Food

  • Cafe quality coffee
  • Decent breakfast
  • Hotel restaurant good enough to be frequented by locals

Entertainment

  • In hotel bars that are patronised by the locals
  • Creative use of pool areas

Health and Fitness

  • Gym equipped with good quality cardio machines and weights
  • Outdoor running track suggestions
  • Spa options

Other

  • Easily accessible power outlets throughout the rom
  • Iron and ironing board
  • All day housekeeping
  • Fridge with usable space
